Most people hide their feeling from time to time. At a family reunion, your partner reveals that you asked him to keep it a secret. Occasional emotional wellness inhibitions generally do not cause problems as long as they are dealt with healthily and productively.
❖ Why do people hide their emotions?
People generally learn to keep their emotions in check for several essential reasons.
Showing your emotions can put you in a vulnerable position, and it's perfectly normal not to want to expose your vulnerability to others. You may be afraid that other people will judge you for certain emotions you express, and you may believe that you cannot control your feeling. As a result, we hide sadness, fear, frustration, and other so-called negative emotions. You may also worry that others will take advantage of these feeling against you, especially if this happens to you.
People often hide their emotions to protect relationship. You may choose to hide your anger when your significant other is doing something exciting. Yes, her behavior bothered you. But if they react negatively when you tell them how you feel, it can lead to even more painful conflict. This desire to avoid pain often stems from an underlying lack of trust in ourselves and others. If someone has manipulated your feeling in the past, you may be afraid to tell someone how you feel. You may not be confident.
If you grow up with the message that your opinions and feeling don't matter, you may learn to hide your feeling from an early age. This often happens when a parent or caregiver judges or criticizes you for expressing your feeling. Again, this judgment is not limited to negative emotions. Some restrictive caregivers reprimand their child for each negative or positive outburst. You may feel uncomfortable sharing your opinions and feeling at some point, so you hide them to prevent further criticism. Caregivers who hide their emotions may also reinforce the idea that you should do the same.
❖ How it affects your Mental exhaustion.
Repressing emotions can mean stopping the memory of something that made you uncomfortable. However, you cannot intentionally forget the reminder. So your mind works long hours not to think of things you don't want to remember.
In response to emotional wellness stress, the forehead, and frontalis muscles contract, reducing blood flow to the brain and leading to headaches. Difficulty experiencing positive things in life Reducing sadness and anger limits the range of emotions you can experience. This includes positive emotions such as joy and happiness. You can't become positive without overcoming negativity.
❖ How to stop
Learning to share your feeling openly can take time and effort. These strategies can help you get used to your emotions and overcome the urge to suppress them.
Mindfulness is about being aware of the present moment and being able to experience what is happening. Emotional mindfulness means acknowledging and accepting emotions as they arise, even if you choose not to express them immediately. But I don't want to fight, so please allow me a moment before explaining why I'm so angry. This understanding helps you understand your role in a situation and consider solutions.
Your emotions are part of your life experience. Ignoring them can damage your identity and self-esteem and prevent you from achieving your personal goals. Opening up to people you love and trust first helps you practice emotional wellness communication. Try to express your feeling in a respectful way using "I" statements. for example:
Two friends are constantly viewing your Zoom Hangouts in your group chat. It's a meeting place I've never been to before. Instead of cultivating hurt feeling alone, say, "I feel like I'm being left behind! Would you like to do a group zoom next time?" Another example:
Your boss denies your request for a raise. Instead of flipping a switch, why not calmly explain why it's worth it? Expressing your disappointment politely can encourage you to reconsider your decision. Pretending you don't care sends the message that you accept the situation. But you don't understand them, so you walk away frustrated and upset. These emotions can ultimately affect your job performance and make it even harder to get a better salary in the future.
EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS YOUR feeling, IT MAY BE HELPFUL TO SPEAK UP LATER IF YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE SITUATION. SAY YOU'RE DEALING WITH A COLLEAGUE WHO CONSTANTLY MAKES HARSH COMMENTS AND DOES LITTLE THINGS THAT ANNOY YOU. YOU POLITELY ASKED THEM TO STOP AND INFORMED THE MANAGER OF THE SITUATION, BUT THE BEHAVIOUR CONTINUED. KEEP CALM AND TRY NOT TO SHOW IRRITATION AT WORK. GIVE YOUR FRIENDLY PARTNER SOME AIR AT HOME. KNOWING YOU CAN SHARE YOUR ANGER LATER HELPS YOU GET THROUGH THE DAY. JOURNALING ALSO HELPS US EXPRESS OUR EMOTIONS AS THEY ARISE. JOURNALING MAY NOT HAVE THE SAME IMPACT AS TALKING TO SOMEONE WHO CAN VALIDATE YOUR DISTRESS, BUT IT CAN HELP YOU PROCESS DIFFICULT EMOTIONS.
